Significant federal prosecutions in the 1980s and 1990s have crippled the power of the 26 Mafia "families" in the U.S. The "old-time" bosses governing every American city where there has been a Mafia presence since before the turn of the last century are either imprisoned, dead, or in exile as a result of sweeping Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (R.I.C.O.) legislation, and the combined efforts of the eighteen regional "strike forces" established between January 1967 and April 1971 under the auspices of the of the Organized Crime and racketeering Section within the criminal division of the U.S. Justice Department.
